Meet Our Superintendent

Chief Dennis Ray


Chief Ray currently serves as Assistant State Fire Marshal for SC as the Superintendent of the SC Fire Academy in Columbia. Chief Ray’s career path began as a dispatcher with the Camden Police Department after graduating from Lugoff-Elgin High School. As Kershaw County formed a county-wide E9-1-1 system, Chief Ray began working as a telecommunications operator, Shift Supervisor, and later Training Officer of the Kershaw County E9-1-1 Center. Chief Ray was hired by the Camden Police Department as a Patrolman and finished his degree in Criminal Justice. He later began a career with the SC State Transport Police in Commercial Vehicle Enforcement working in the Rock Hill region then transferring back home to the Columbia region. After 8 years, Chief Ray was named a Law Enforcement Liaison with the SC Office of Highway Safety; a division of the SC Department of Public Safety. Chief Ray coordinated all the Law Enforcement Networks in the state and coordinated financial support to local law enforcement in the areas of traffic safety and DUI enforcement. In June of 2010, Chief Ray was hired by the Board of Fire Commissioners to head the Lugoff Fire Department in Lugoff, SC instilling the core values of Pride, Honor, Integrity, and Professionalism among Department members. He served as Fire Chief at Lugoff until December of 2017 when he was hired as the Superintendent of the SC Fire Academy.

Chief Ray has been a volunteer firefighter for 28 years, is a certified Child Safety Seat Technician, and Medical First Responder. Chief Ray is a Past President of the Kershaw County Chamber of Commerce, Past Chairman of the Member Benefits Committee of the SC Firefighter’s Association’s Executive Committee, past member of the SC Association of Special Purpose Districts Executive Board, and a member of the SC Preventative Radiological/Nuclear Detection Executive Committee. Chief Ray serves as a teacher and Deacon at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Lugoff and is a Gideon Speaker in the Lugoff-Elgin Gideon Camp. Chief Ray resides in Lugoff in Kershaw County located in central South Carolina. Chief Ray’s philosophy is Faith, Family, Fire, and Flip Flops.
