Special Challenge Program

The Fire Academy will begin offering a special challenge program to allow firefighters throughout the state to take advantage of prior training and years of experience that may allow them to challenge the following IFSAC endorsed courses and the 1152 course, without taking the actual course. The courses are 1152, Fundamentals of Firefighting; 1153, NFPA Fire Firefighter I; NFPA Fire Fighter II; and 2100, NFPA Fire Officer I. How did this come about? The Fire School Advisory Committee empowered by the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association, along with the South Carolina Fire Academy; have been working together over the past few months on ways to ensure that the minimum training requirements for firefighting in South Carolina will meet NFPA 1001, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification Standard. It was the general consensus that prior training and years of experience should be considered as part of this process. So, for the next 24 months, starting January 1, 2011 and ending on December 31, 2012, the following special challenge process will be in effect for the four courses listed above. Please refer to Administrative Guideline AG-009 Firefighter Challenge for complete details.
